Turner, Joseph Mallord William

Turner, Joseph Mallord William
(4/23/1775
London-12/19/1851 Chelsea) (England) Etcher, painter, and mezzotint printmaker. Trained at the Royal College of Art, beginning when he was only 14. He became a major figure in English Romanticism and his style influenced the development of Impressionism. Best known as a landscape and seascape artist, he produced a number of erotic drawings. It is said that those works were destroyed at his death by a critic anxious to protect Turner's reputation, but recent research has challenged that assertion.
